We had a snowstorm blow through and everything looked so amazing covered in snow. The patterns that the snow makes on the chain link fence is fun to try and photograph. Here's my attempt.

Okay, so I kind of fell of the wagon for a little bit. I don't know why, I was very uninspired and having a hard time coming up with anything. I did try some panning shots one day. Sarah was begging me to go outside and ride her bike so I thought I would try panning again. I read up on some technique and I think I did better this time.

I took the girls to the aquarium and decided not to take my Nikon because I didn't want to lug it around. I took my little Olympus point and shoot and tried to get a few pictures. After using my Nikon for so long and then going back to my little camera, I realized why I love it so much and why a DSLR is so much better than a point and shoot (for me anyway). Needless to say, the pictures for the day didn't turn out the way I wanted. Lesson learned, it is worth lugging around the big camera to get the shot you want.

I spent the evening out at Farmington Bay bird refuge. I had seen the clouds earlier in the evening and thought there was a chance of a great sunset so I grabbed my camera and headed out. I was not disappointed. I am disappointed in my ability to capture what I see. Sunset pictures are something that I am still trying to figure out. This was one of the best. I need to figure out how to blend two exposures together to get a higher dynamic range. This may be a photo I revisit when I figure that out.

This was the day of Sarah's actual birthday. We invited family over for cake and ice cream and had a great time visiting.

Part of the reason that I got behind on this project is that we were getting ready for our daughter's first friend birthday party. She had a wonderful time and since pictures of the party were the only thing I took that day, that is what you get.

The theme for the party was based on the new Disney movie Tangled and Sam got an idea from a coworker for a game that we thought went great with that theme. We strung yarn back and forth all around the play room and then tied the kids goody bags to the other end of the strings. The kids were each given a craft stick and the other end and had to untangle the yarn to get their bag. I think they were a little nervous at first but ended up having a great time.

Not very artistic I know but it's the best I got.

An attempt at a long night time exposure. I didn't really like the angle that I had but I was getting cold and almost out of gas in my car so I didn't want to drive to a different location. This is something that will be revisited later.

I am falling behind again so I have to admit I cheated a little bit. I've been missing some days and then taking several photos on others. I promise I will try and do better. Here's what I have for day 12.

This is some oregano that is growing in my garden. I know that is not really remarkable except that it is the middle of January. I have to admire this hardy little plant. The next time I need oregano in my cooking I'll have to remember to just step outside my front door.

Still working on macro. Getting a sharp focus is what is really difficult for me, especially since I have to manually focus with the reverse mount lens. I'm working on it.

Just wanted to try this for a photography challenge for holiday food even though the holidays are over. I also wanted to practice getting a good white background and I thought the colors of the candy would show up nicely. This was with my 50mm lens and I need practice with manual focus.

So here goes. I was playing around with some macro photography. This is one of the noise makers that we got for New Years Eve. It's not quite what I was hoping for but that's okay.

New Year, New Start

Okay, so I obviously didn't make it all the way to the end of the year. But we have a new year ahead of us and I'm going to try again. The whole point is to keep trying and hopefully improve my photography in the process. I did learn a lot last year and hope to do even better in the next. I wanted to have one last post this year and just post a few of the images that I really like. Here they are.

Here are a couple of the girls just out in our backyard.

This one I was working more on some macro photography. That is an area I would like to do more in.

We went out driving one night and I captured a couple of different views of this sunset.

Some of my family members were nice enough to let me practice on them this summer. These are a few shots of my nephews. What a handsome bunch.

Even though the sun was getting a little high at this point and the light wasn't as good, I love this picture of the boys. It shows their their personalities so well.

Trying my hand at some action shots at the Tour of Utah this year. I love this one because I didn't realize until after I was looking through the photos that I had captured this one of George Hincapie. We've followed him in cycling for a long time and I was thrilled to have gotten this.

On our trip to Oregon this year, we stopped at the Portland temple on our way home. These are some of the images I took.

I took this one fall morning. The light was so pretty and the leaves had finally started to drop from our tree in the front yard.

This is my newest niece. Her parents were kind enough to let me try my hand at infant photography. It's a lot harder than it looks. She was so alert and those big beautiful eyes are so amazing.

The Christmas season is not complete without an ornament shot.

Week 6

So some of you may have already seen a few of these on Facebook but I had to repost them here because it was so much fun and I am really pleased with the way some of these turned out. I got an adapter for my camera that allows me to mount certain lenses on my camera body backwards so that I can shoot macro (which means that you can get a lot closer to the subject.) I had a great time outside in my yard playing with this and need to get it out and do some more. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them.

We had a late snow storm this week and during a break in the weather I went out and took a few pictures of our poor flowers. I was quite pleased with the way these turned out.

The second group of photos were taken on the Kaysville wilderness park trail. We didn't get very far but sometimes it's more about the journey and not the destination.

The photo of the girls in the playhouse I just liked. The other photos were from a photo challenge that I got off of a photography website. The challenge is called "Ten minutes from home". The idea is that you can either walk, ride, drive or fly ten minutes from home and then you photograph whatever is there. It has to be exactly ten minutes. So one evening we loaded the kids in the car and drove ten minutes away from home. This is what I got.

Okay, so life has officially taken over and I have decided that I need to rethink and reformat my project. So instead of a picture everyday I will be posting every week. I may take a picture every day in that week or I may only take one but at least I will keep trying and learning. So here is week one.

Didn't get anything taken for this day. Spent most of the day in doctor's offices. Lily had an ear infection and Sam had a sinus infection and bronchitis. I had a strep culture done but it was negative. Spent the remainder of the day waiting for prescriptions to be filled.

This is the only picture I shot that day. Lily was not feeling well and we ended up taking her to the doctor the next day. She was snuggling with Daddy and watching a movie on the portable DVD player.

Lily loves purses. Anything she can pull over her arm or shoulder and away she goes. This one turned out kind of interesting with the blur around her. It reminds me of how she is always on the go.

Some days it's all I can do just to pull out my camera and try to grab something that I see the kids doing. Lily was walking around with these balloons and having a great time so I tried to get a few pictures. Not spectacular but I at least took a photo.

Okay, so I know I got waaaaay behind on posting. I have been taking photos but I just haven't been keeping up on posting them. There have been a couple of days that I've missed but I will attempt to get something put in on those days. For those of you who keep checking back, your patience will hopefully be rewarded.

So this night, I told Sam that he had the girls and that I was taking my camera and I would be back.... sometime. I'm grateful to have such an understanding husband. He even suggested the location which ended up being the city cemetery. It was very peaceful and was just what I needed.

The girls were playing this annoying game where these plastic ducks move around this "pond" and quack incessantly. While I was laying there I had an idea for a photo. It turned out better than could be expected since I had two little girls jumping on my back while I took the picture.

Finally all caught up for now. It was such a beautiful day yesterday that while Sarah was at dance Lily and I headed over to the Lagoon Park Trail and went exploring. It was fun to just let her walk at her own pace and discover the world. I love seeing things through my children's eyes.

I love spring! I bought a little pot of these miniature daffodils last year and we planted them outside after they were done blooming. I had almost forgotten about them till they started to open up.

We were invited by some friends over to their house to roast marshmallows. I took my camera thinking it would be fun to try some photos of the girls by firelight. They didn't really work out the way I had hoped but here is just one photo of the fire itself. It's not great but there you have it.

I have always wanted to try taking pictures of water drops. It seems to be something just about every photographer tries at some point. I haven't tried it up till now because every tutorial I've seen on how to do it has required an off camera flash, which I don't have and cannot afford right now. I finally saw a post in a photography forum where someone was able to set it up in their kitchen sink and used his on camera flash. It's not as spectacular as some other water drop photos that I've seen but I decided to give it a try. It was a lot of fun and I think I could improve upon it. Here's an example of what I ended up with.

Sorry, I have really dropped the ball lately. I haven't been consistent with taking pictures or posting them. We had injured kids, sick kids and I wasn't feeling great a couple of those days so the photography kind of went on the back burner. I have recommitted myself to this project and will do better.

Today I made bread. I don't make bread very often but it sounded so good. It was kind of cold today and we had a bunch of vegetables to use up so we had minestrone soup, salad and homemade bread. I was so proud I had to take a picture. Also, food photography is something I would like to work on.

Another day where I failed to get a photo taken. I was not feeling great Sunday and all I wanted to do was get through the day and go back to bed. Here is a photo from another time though, just to fill in. This was an image from the zoo. These turkeys are not the prettiest creatures but they were fun to watch that day. They were strutting around, puffing their feathers out and trying to attract a mate. I guess when you're this ugly it takes a lot of work.

I'm kind of pleased with this photo. Not just because it caught a great expression from my daughter, but that I did it with manual exposure and manual focus. I really love this 50 mm prime lens and I'm getting used to focusing manually since my camera does not have the ability to focus this lens. The 1.8 aperture lets me take photos in much lower light. I look forward to using this lens for a long time.

This photo was partially inspired by a weekly assignment on a photography forum that I frequent and partially because it was cold and wet today. The assignment was food photography, namely beverages. I love hot chocolate and I drink it on a regular basis, even when it is not cold outside. Even better is a couple slices of toast to dip in it.

I decided to head back out to Farmington Bay bird refuge today while Sarah was at dance. Lily came along for the ride and took a little nap. The sky was kind of dark and stormy and for some reason this tree stood out today. I did play with the levels a little and the saturation. I'm pretty pleased with the way this turned out.

The moon was rising over the mountains and I was trying to get some shots of it. It took me awhile to find settings that kind of worked so the moon had risen quite a bit by then. It was such a nice day today that we had to get outside and work in the yard and play for awhile. To keep the girls happy I pulled out the sidewalk chalk and Sarah wanted to play hopscotch. I thought about cleaning up Sarah's shoes in photoshop but then decided that I wanted to remember it just like it is.

We went to the park today because it was so nice in the afternoon. The girls had a great time feeding the ducks and geese.

Today we had some crazy weather. It snowed in the morning and then the sun came out and melted the snow. While it was melting off our maple tree in the front yard, the tree was covered with glistening drops of water. The photo doesn't really do it justice but it was hard to capture the feeling of it. We also went for a walk later and I got this image. Just playing around but I kind of like it.

The girls and I went for a walk today. I have a serious case of spring fever. I'm looking forward to when the flowers start blooming and we get a little more color into the world again. I had wanted to get a picture of my camera using a mirror and the timer but I didn't like the results at all. I will have to work on that. So, I decided to just hold the camera and snap a few pictures in the mirror. This is what I ended up with. I cropped it pretty tight and then changed it to black and white and added a little texture. I kind of like it.

I did take some photos today but it was with my little Olympus point and shoot. Lily was helping her dad shave and I went to grab my camera and realized that it was still in the trunk of the car from our trip to the zoo yesterday. It was pretty cold so I wanted to let my camera warm up in the bag before I pulled it out so I wouldn't risk getting any condensation on the lens. So this is what you get today.

Today we went to the zoo in the snow and had a lot of fun. Some of the animals were so much more active in the cold weather than in the middle of the summer. Here are a couple of shots of one of the tiger cubs that was born at the zoo this past summer.

This is my attempt at panning. The idea is to get a moving subject in focus with the background blurry. Obviously I need more practice and to do a little research about the best settings to use on my camera but this was all I had time for today. I will revisit this technique another time.

Back to shooting inside. I've been wanting to do something with these dominoes for awhile but I wasn't sure what approach I wanted to take. I wanted to play with setting them up and trying to capture the moment that they start knocking each other over. I liked this one best.

This was Tuesday and the day that we left to come home. Again, I was so preoccupied with keeping the kids happy that I didn't get a photo taken that day. But here are a couple from the previous days. I had so many that I couldn't choose so I'll use them to fill in. It was a fun weekend and it was great to get outside and shoot. I hope you like them.

Here are a few more images that I took the next day along the same trail as the day before. We went further up where the trail runs next to a lake. The lake was really low and wasn't looking really attractive but there were plenty of other things to photograph.

I have to admit that I did not shoot a photograph on this day. We were driving fourteen hours to Oregon and I just got a little preoccupied with keeping the kids happy in the car. But I did take a lot of images once we got out to Oregon so here is one from a later day. We were driving around and these chickens were crossing the road. Why? I still don't know but I thought it was pretty funny.

I'm sorry that I am so far behind. We took a quick trip out to Oregon to visit Sam's grandma and had no internet access. Anyway, the day before we left we got a snow storm and I shot this image of Lily looking out the window. Maybe it's just because she is my daughter and I know how curious she is about everything but I loved this picture.

Tonight I decided I really needed to get out of the house. I left Sam home to make dinner and watch the girls and I grabbed my camera and took off, with Sam's permission of course. I decided to head over to the Kaysville Tabernacle and see what I could find there. I also got some images at the old log cabin across the street. I can't decide which ones to post so here are a few to choose from. I can't decide if I really like the first one or if it just makes me dizzy.

Today wasn't a very productive day, at least photographically, but I did get some shots of the girls swinging outside. I think we are all going a little stir crazy and are more than ready for spring. I'm a little frustrated with the way these turned out. The focus is not sharp at all. I guess I need to work on my action shots and shutter speed.

Day two of light painting. These are images that I got using a little flashlight. I put the camera on a long exposure, around 12 seconds, in a completely dark room and then used the flashlight to "paint" the guitar. The first one I also then used the flashlight pointing toward the camera to outline the guitar. I can see how this kind of photography could get very addicting. It's a lot of fun.

I have to admit I got this idea from a photography forum's weekly assignment on center composition. We just happened to have this decorative shell so I decided to see what I could do with it. There are a couple of things that I would do differently but it's okay. The focus could be better and I would increase the contrast to show more detail of the shell. I may have to revisit this later.

This is a Christmas cactus at my in-laws house. They have had it for years and it blooms prolifically several times a year. It is actually a plant that my mother-in-law got after her father passed away. We have a cutting off of it and it blooms sporadically for us.

Sarah was playing around with her dad the other night and I didn't have a picture for the day so I grabbed my camera and took this. I know I broke one of the cardinal rules of photography by using my on camera flash but I was being lazy and the light was too low for anything else. I still love the picture. I'm sorry that I haven't posted anything for awhile. I've had some problems uploading pictures to the blog. I could upload text but not the pictures and since that is what this blog is all about I didn't see much use until we got it figured out. Since the weather is still so uncooperative and since I'm frankly too lazy to venture out in the cold right now, I've been doing some more still life pictures. These are some I got playing around with an old egg beater and some eggs. These didn't turn out as sharp as I would have liked and I'm not crazy about the white background but I am still learning.

I was in a hurry and quickly snapped a few pictures of the piano. This depth of field is a little too shallow for what I wanted but I didn't have time to go back and do it again. Some days you get what you can.

Today I spent time working on this still life. Sam suggested the angle and I quite like it. I'm getting used to a new lens that I recently got. It's a 50 mm prime lens with a 1.8 aperture. It's amazing how narrow the depth of field can be with that large of an aperture. I'm quite excited about using it. Anyway, I hope you like it.

Tonight I went out to Farmington Bay bird refuge and took some photos. I played with the color of the sky in the second. I'm still deciding if I like the color.

I have driven past this flag and wanted to do something with it but was waiting for the weather to clear up and the light to be better. Today conditions were just about right.

Saturday we had gone outside to shovel the walks and I was looking down the street at the footprints in the snow and the repeating pattern of the trees. It didn't turn out quite the way I wanted but this is what I got.

Okay, so I've gotten a little behind. I didn't actually get a photo taken for Friday so here is a photo from another day that didn't make it in before. I was trying to get a picture of some birds that were flying around in our trees in the back yard. This one was probably the best.

Tonight I thought it would be fun to play around with some photos of Sam's eye of the storm. You know, one of those globe like things with electrical lights that are drawn to your hand when you touch it. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and here are a couple of the images I got.

This was an exercise in shallow depth of field and getting the focus where I wanted it to be. I was moderately successful. This was all done with manual focus so not too bad I guess.

Another night and I didn't have a photo so I was looking around the house trying to find something to photograph. Sam grabbed this rack of craft scissors and told me to take a picture of that. So here you go. Sorry I'm not very creative but this is helping me work more on exposure and playing some more with depth of field.
